What’s good in the LBC: Art Walk, Formula DRIFT and a Day Float

The weekend is fast approaching, and it will finally (probably) not be raining. With temperatures in the low to mid-60s expected, here are a few things to do around Long Beach that come with a side of Vitamin D.

Long Beach Camerata Singers concert (Friday)

The local choral group will sing excerpts from their 2023 piece, “The Worth of Water” on Friday evening as a benefit for a local family who lost their home and business in February.

When a suspected DUI driver caused two cars to crash into their building, Artos Saucedo and his wife and son were unharmed, but their home and adjacent art space, the Open Gallery, were wrecked. The Camerata Singers had planned a concert in the gallery to complement an exhibition, but instead shifted gears and will perform to raise money for the family.

The Long Beach Camerata Singers will perform at 8 p.m. Friday at Grace Presbyterian Church, 3955 N. Studebaker Rd. Attendance is free; donations are encouraged.

Art Market on 1st Street (Saturday)

If you’re looking for artistic inspiration, you can probably find some in Downtown or the East Village Arts District, where a variety of happenings are scheduled Saturday afternoon and evening.

Shop local artisan-made soaps and cosmetics, tote bags, ceramics and more at the Art Market on 1st Street.

The market runs from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. between Linden and Elm avenues.

DTLB Art Walk: Celebrate Downtown Edition (Saturday)

Wander between more than half a dozen Downtown galleries and shops to see displays of work by local artists, hear live music, or enter your work in an art contest this Saturday. It’s all part of the DTLB Art Walk’s Downtown Edition, which will showcase the works of artists from all over the city.

Art Walk takes place from 4 to 9 p.m. at 240 Long Beach Blvd.

Formula DRIFT (Friday, Saturday)

If the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach (taking place April 19-21) is the main course, think of this as the appetizer: Formula DRIFT will hit the streets of Long Beach this Friday afternoon and all day Saturday.

Professional drivers will test their drifting skills, some will sign autographs, and spectators will have a chance to walk the track. Tickets start at $45 and the action takes place around the Long Beach Convention Center.

Formula Drift begins Friday at 7 a.m. and ends Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at 300 E. Ocean Blvd.

Day Float (Saturday)

For those who’d rather go by sea than by land, head to the harbor and step aboard a vessel for Day Float, a dance party on the water.

The 21-and-over event will feature two dance floors with DJs playing a wide range of musical genres. Tickets go for $55 and up and can be purchased here. And don’t forget your sunscreen!

Day Float starts at 3:30 p.m. at Catalina Classic Cruises, 1046 Queens Hwy.

The Long Beach Plant Market (Saturday)

Every second Saturday, The Bamboo Club in the Zaferia District hosts The Long Beach Plant Market, which features rare house plants, exotic tropicals, crafts, gardening supplies and more. Plus vinyl DJs and of course, tiki cocktails will be available.

The plant sale will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at The Bamboo Club, located at 3522 E. Anaheim St.

LBX Neighborhood Market: Farm Animals Day (Saturday)

Grab your kids and your pets and come over to the LBX Neighborhood Market, which will take over the outdoor space by the LBX Hangar on Saturday with a petting zoo, pony rides and a photo booth for pics with your pet, in addition to craft vendors, DJs and live music. Admission is free; there’s a charge for the pony rides and petting zoo. Click here for more information and tickets.

Corner Garden Workshop: Watercolors (Sunday)

The Museum of Latin American Art is hosting a Sunday morning art workshop with artist Maria Guadalupe in its Corner Garden. Guadalupe will lead the class from 9 to 11 a.m. Admission is $5 and all materials will be provided by MOLAA. Register here.
