Police ask for help identifying hit-and-run driver who killed homeless man
Police believe the driver of a black SUV hit a man on Ocean Boulevard around 11:42 p.m. on July 14.
Police are asking for the public's help in identifying the vehicle and driver involved in a hit-and-run crash in Downtown that killed a homeless man in mid-July.
Long Beach police say the driver of a newer model black SUV with black wheels was heading eastbound on Ocean Boulevard around 11:42 p.m. on July 14 when they hit a man walking outside a crosswalk.
The SUV then fled the scene, police added.
The pedestrian, identified as 53-year-old Brian McBroom, was then hit by people driving a white truck and red sedan, according to police. The drivers of those vehicles also fled the scene, police said after the crash.
Long Beach Fire Department personnel determined that McBroom died of his injuries at the scene, according to authorities.
The LBPD released two images of the suspect vehicle, both of which are blurry.
McBroom's death was the 27th traffic fatality reported by the LBPD in 2026. Last year, the department reported 56 traffic-related fatalities from 53 crashes, making it the deadliest year on the road since at least 1990, when the city reported 51 deaths, according to LBPD data from a public records request by the Watchdog.
The LBPD reported 40 traffic fatalities by this time last year.
