Police shoot man they say pulled out BB gun at Downtown Metro platform

Police say they responded to the Metro platform near Fifth Street and Pacific Avenue around 9:10 p.m. after someone reported seeing a man there with a gun.

A man was hospitalized Wednesday night after being shot by police in Downtown Long Beach, authorities said.

Long Beach Police say they responded to the Metro platform in the area of Fifth Street and Pacific Avenue around 9:10 p.m. where 35-year-old Tyrell Harris, a homeless man, was reportedly pointing a gun at people and threatening to shoot them.

Officers Harris, who immediately ran away from the platform, according to the LBPD.

The officers chased after the 35-year-old and at some point, they shot him in the upper body, authorities said.

Officers rendered aid to the Harris until Long Beach Fire Department paramedics arrived and took him to a local hospital for treatment, authorities said.

Harris was medically cleared before being taken to Long Beach City Jail for booking, police said.

He was booked for three counts of criminal threats, one count of assault with a deadly weapon, one count of obstruction and resisting arrest, one count of exhibiting an imitation firearm, and an unrelated felony warrant, police said. He’s currently being held without bail, they added.

No officers were injured during the shooting, according to the LBPD, who said they recovered a functioning BB gun with a carbon dioxide cartridge and pellets.

Officers were wearing body cameras at the time of the shooting and the video will be made available at a later date, police said.

Meanwhile, the LBPD and Los Angeles District Attorney’s office will each conduct an investigation to determine whether the officer’s actions were within protocol and lawful.
