Police holding DUI checkpoint in East Long Beach Friday night
The checkpoint will be active from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m., authorities said.
The Long Beach Police Department will hold a DUI/Driver's license checkpoint in its East Division area on Friday, Aug. 14.
This area is the department's largest patrol division and is bounded by Del Amo Boulevard to the north; the Pacific Ocean to the south; Orange County to the east; and Cherry Avenue and the City of Signal Hill to the west, according to the LBPD.
The LBPD determines checkpoint locations using data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes, police said.
Impaired driving can include being under of the influence of alcohol as well as prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs and marijuana — both medicinal and recreational.
A first-time DUI conviction can lead to an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license, according to the LBPD.
This will be the LBPD's fourth DUI checkpoint in East Long Beach this year.
The department's most recent checkpoint in the area took place on June 18 at the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Second Street. Of the 1173 vehicles that passed through that checkpoint, 372 were screened, according to the LBPD.
One person was arrested at that checkpoint for DUI and three others cited for driver's license issues, police said.
