Bay Shore library to close for maintenance work in late October
The 67-year-old building will close for the rest of 2026 to make ADA improvements to the restrooms, according to city officials.
The Bay Shore Neighborhood Library will close later this month for the remainder of 2026 for construction work, the city said Wednesday.
The closure will start Monday, Oct. 26 so workers can make Americans with Disabilities Act improvements to the building's restrooms, according to the city's Department of Library, Arts, and Culture.
The work will improve the library’s existing restrooms, creating a "more accessible, inclusive and functional space for library visitors and staff," according an overview of the project.
This includes new fully accessible, all-gender facilities, a relocated electrical panel to support the updated layout and modified hallway and office walls, city officials said. During the renovation, workers will upgrade the library’s lighting and plumbing fixtures, replace interior finishes and install a new drinking fountain.
The closure is expected to last until early 2027, according to the city.
While the branch will be closed during construction, a few library services will still be available, city officials said. These include:
- To-Go Service: Afternoon pickup service will be available for library materials.
- Weekly Story Times: Story times will continue to provide opportunities for children and families to stay connected with the library at off-site locations. For more information about locations, dates and times, click here.
The Bay Shore Neighborhood library first opened in 1929, but was located at 194 Corona Avenue. It moved to its currently location at 195 Bay Shore Avenue in 1940, with the current building opening on April 24, 1959, according to the city.
