What’s good in the LBC: Cinco de Mayo bar crawls, Star Wars celebrations and more
This weekend is both Cinco de Mayo and "May the 4th" Star Wars day, here are some events to celebrate the festivities.
Both Cinco de Mayo and “May the 4th” Star Wars day fall on a weekend this year which means two opportunities to get out around town and celebrate.
Most of that includes drinking and eating, but there’s some live music and dancing to be found if you know where to look. Thankfully, that’s what you have us here for.
Here’s what’s good in Long Beach this weekend:
A night of disco, funk and more (Saturday)
One of Long Beach’s newest art galleries, Environment, is hosting a night of classic disco, funk and soul records from 7 to 11 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in advance for $5 or at the door for $10. Art, photography, live painting, food, drinks, local bands and more will be featured. Tickets can be purchased here and future events can be found at environmentlb on Instagram.

Long Beach Filipino Festival (Saturday)
The Long Beach Filipino Festival will return for its fifth year at the Jackie Robinson Academy from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Food vendors like Full Send BBQ and Illa Manilla will be featured and there will be live entertainment, including the hip-hop dance group Kaba Modern. Comedians and Filipino martial arts groups will also have some stage time. This year’s theme will be Star Wars, given the festival’s date, and dressing in Star Wars attire will get you a $1 discount on the $5 entrance fee. Children 10 and under and seniors 65 and over get free admission. More information can be found here.

Casa grand re-opening (Saturday)
The vintage and handmade goods shop on Retro Row, Casa, will celebrate a grand re-opening on Saturday with food from Got Your Back and live music from DJs Las Chicas Tristes. Got Your Back will be serving up grilled red snapper, mushroom tempura and more. The celebration will run from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m.
Casa is at 1930 E. Fourth Street.
Star Wars Dance Party (Saturday)
If you’re in the mood for a Star Wars dance party, Altar Society Brewing Co. may just have what you’re looking for. The Downtown brewery will host a Death Star Disco from 8 p.m. to just before midnight. Local Long Beach DJ Tomas DeLos Reyes will spin disco, funk and throwbacks. The brewery will also serve Star Wars-themed cocktails. Tickets are $10, plus fees. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Long Beach Bartenders Guild.

Downtown Tacos and Tequila Bar Crawl (Saturday and Sunday)
Pub Crawls put together a Tacos and Tequila Bar Crawl on Saturday and on Cinco de Mayo, which starts at 4 p.m. at The Stave in Downtown. Check-in time to receive a wristband for the event ends at 8 p.m. Tickets range from $15 to $20, plus fees, and include one shot and taco, low prices on drink specials, food specials and more. The Heart Tones concert (Sunday)
The Hawthorne-based band The Heart Tones will celebrate Cinco de Mayo will a concert at the Edison Theater on Sunday at 6 p.m. The Chicano Soul group will also feature Vaije Caliche, DJ Soulita and Caveman Leo. General admission is priced at $20, early bird VIP is priced at $30. Tickets can be purchased here.

Star Wars brunch and burlesque (Sunday)
If you thought you’d escaped all things Star Wars, you’d be wrong. Let your freak flag fly at Harvelle’s where Dirty Little Secrets Burlesque will host a "Brunch at the Jedi Temple." The event runs from noon to 1:30 p.m. and will feature seductive performances and dance numbers that pay homage to the Star Wars saga. Tickets range from $20 for standing room to $145 for private tables. There is a two-drink minimum. More information can be found here.
