Man arrested after SWAT standoff in North Long Beach
Another man accidentally shot himself in the Sunrise neighborhood in a separate incident, authorities said.
Police arrested a 27-year-old Long Beach man after he brandished what turned out to be a replica firearm in North Long Beach Sunday afternoon.
Long Beach police say Bryan Demetrius Gates, Jr. displayed a firearm and then fled into a residence in the 400 block of Louise Street around 3:19 p.m. when officers arrived.
Officers attempted to deescalate the situation, but Gates did not comply, which prompted the department to call in the SWAT team, police said.
After "several hours," SWAT personnel took Gates into custody after using pepper gel, less-lethal munitions and a K9, according to the LBPD.
Officers arrested Gates and then found the replica firearm, police said. Gates was taken to a local hospital for medical clearance prior to booking, according to police.
Gates was later booked for displaying an imitation firearm and obstructing a peace officer, police added.
About nine hours later, LBPD officers responded to the 500 block of Rhea Street around 11:53 p.m. following reports of a shooting, police said. There, officers found a man with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his lower body.
The Long Beach Fire Department personnel took the man to a local hospital, where he was treated for the wound, which was not considered life-threatening, according to authorities.
The investigation into that shooting is ongoing, police said.
