Driver dies after running red light, crashing into other car in East Long Beach, police say
Police say the driver ran a red light and crashed into another vehicle at the intersection of Wardlow Road and Palo Verde Avenue at around 7:30 a.m.
A man died Tuesday morning when he ran a red light and crashed into another car at an intersection in East Long Beach, police said.
Police say the driver of a 2002 Toyota Sequoia was going eastbound on Wardlow Road at around 7:30 a.m. when he ran a red light at Palo Verde Avenue.
Thatβs when he hit a 2014 Toyota Tundra that was going southbound on Palo Verde Avenue and had the right of way, police said.
The force of the crash caused the Sequoia to overturn and its driver to get ejected, police said.
Officers responded to the scene where they found the driver of the Sequoia unresponsive, according to the Long Beach Police Department.
Despite efforts by Long Beach Fire personnel to save his life, he died at the scene, police said. He was only identified by police as a 35-year-old Los Angeles resident.
The driver of the Tundra, which police identified as a 41-year-old Lakewood woman, remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation, authorities said.
Aside from running the red light, police say it appears that speed and distracted driving also played a role in the crash.
This marks the 35th traffic death in Long Beach this year.
