Following the shooting, LBPD homicide detectives “quickly identified the suspect” as a teen living in Long Beach, police said Saturday. The suspect’s name is being withheld because he is a minor.
On Friday, LBPD detectives arrested the suspect in Lakewood, according to police. Officers booked him at the Long Beach Jail for murder and minor in possession of a firearm, authorities said.
Police later took the suspect to Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall in Downey, where he is being held without bail, police said.
Detectives will present the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office for filing consideration, but the motive for the shooting is still under investigation, according to the LBPD.
In a statement released Saturday, Police Chief Wally Hebeish said that following the shooting officers “worked nonstop” to identify the suspect.
“I am deeply troubled by the killing of a 15-year-old and it is extremely alarming that the suspect believed responsible is also 15 years old,” Hebeish added in the statement. “The Long Beach Police Department will never allow youth violence to be normalized in our community.”
