LBPD to hold DUI checkpoint in West Long Beach Friday night
The checkpoint will be active from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Friday, May 8.
The Long Beach Police Department will hold a DUI/Driver License checkpoint in its West Division area on Friday, May 8.
This area covers about 13 square miles and includes the Port of Long Beach, the area west of the 710 Freeway and a large part of Central Long Beach, according to the LBPD.
The LBPD determines checkpoint locations using data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes, police said.
Impaired driving can include being under of the influence of alcohol as well as prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs and marijuana, both medicinal and recreational.
“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Commander Jeremy Boshnack said in a statement. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improves traffic safety.”
A first-time DUI conviction can lead to an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license, according to the LBPD.
