A 15-year-old Long Beach resident has been arrested on suspicion of fatally shooting a man near the Long Beach Grand Prix last month, according to police.

Long Beach police say the teen shot and killed Long Beach resident Brandon Villarreal, 21, on April 12.

Officers responded around 5:50 p.m. that night to the area of Cedar Walk and Ocean Boulevard in Downtown, where they found Villarreal suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, police said.

Long Beach Fire Department personnel took Villarreal to a local hospital, where he later died of his injuries, according to authorities.

Assisted by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and the FBI Criminal Apprehension Team, LBPD detectives identified the suspect, police said. They also learned that the suspect had travelled to Las Vegas but was returning to California on May 4 after being arrested during a pedestrian stop in Barstow, according to the LBPD.

The suspect was first processed at the Long Beach City Jail and later transported to Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall, where he was booked for murder, police said. His bail was set at No Bail, according to the LBPD.

Detectives presented the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, but the motive for the shooting remains under investigation, police said.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact Homicide Detectives Eric Thai or Chasen Contreras at 562-570-7244.
