Long Beach Museum of Art will unveil a new exhibit, Long Beach Sake Day will celebrate all things Japanese sake and local artists will open their studios to the public.

What's Good, LBC? Long Beach Marathon, fall exhibitions and more

With the changing of seasons comes new exhibits in museums and new seasons of concerts, plays and more. This week, the LB Marathon will take over the city, but if you're not a runner, there are plenty of other things that will keep you busy.

Here's your weekly round-up:

Long Beach Museum of Art exhibits (Oct. 4)

The Long Beach Museum of Art will unveil a fall exhibit on Wednesday, "Motion Pictures," by Los Angeles-based painter Greg Ito. The exhibit will include paintings, sculpture and a video installation. "LBMA VIDEO: Shared Realities; A Cable Access Series," another new exhibit, can also be viewed starting Oct 4. It will include interviews, art reviews and discussion, music and live performances on a range of topics highlighting video as an artistic medium. More information here.

Long Beach Marathon (Oct. 5 - 6)

Returning for its 40th year, the Long Beach Marathon will take place this weekend. We've got all the details you need to know about upcoming road closures and a map of the marathon route can be found here. Registration to participate is mainly sold out, but you can still be part of the action by cheering along the route.

Long Beach Sake Day (Oct. 5)

Sake Secret on Pine Avenue has organized another Sake Day this Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. at Rancho Los Cerritos. Spend the day tasting sake brewed in Japan and locally, learning about the spirit from experts, enjoying light bites and more. Tickets are $60 for general admission, which includes admission and a souvenir tasting glass. More information and ticket purchase here.

Ongoing events: 

  • Latino Restaurant Week will run through Oct. 5. There will be 18 participating restaurants with special menus and deals for the week. More details here.
  • Dark Harbor is back! The festival will include mazes, live music, themed bars, on-board the Queen Mary experiences, food and more. It will run until Nov. 2. Tickets start at $39.99 and can be purchased here.
  • The Passion of Dracula, a new show playing on the Long Beach Playhouse's MainStage Theater will run through Oct. 19. Tickets ($35) can be purchased here.
  • From now until Jan. 15, you can play a Pixar-themed mini golf at 2ND & PCH for $25 per person. For tee times and ticket purchase visit here.

Wednesday

  • Just in time for spooky season, you can learn about tropical bats from Smithsonian scientists at a virtual talk hosted by the Long Beach Public Library at 11 a.m. Register here.

Thursday

  • Compound will host a free Hi-Fi Nite Market where DJs Hector Waluyo & Jeremy Sole will be spinning records from 5 to 10 p.m. Vendors include Latinx with Plants, Twelves, Record Box and more. Details here.

Friday

  • Bixby Knolls First Fridays is set for this week from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. The theme will be Arts Month, and as always shops will be open late and there will be live music and community.

Saturday

  • Once a year Long Beach's local artists open their workshops for a free, self-guided open studio tour around the city. Starting Oct. 5 and running through Oct. 27, residents can visit over 50 artist workshops around the city. No ticket is necessary and art from local artists will be available for purchase.   • Residents are invited to donate gently-worn running shoes and clothing at the Long Beach Marathon Expo this weekend. More details here.

Sunday

  • Kids can get in free to the RuMBa Foundation Family Concert's "Magical Musical Kingdom" this Sunday at the Terrace Theater. Parking will also be free and tickets for adults are $20. There will be activities from 1 to 3 p.m. and 4 to 5 p.m. The concert will run from 3 to 4 p.m. Activities include crafts, interactive play, games and more. More information can be found here.
