Gunman dead, officer injured following standoff in North Long Beach, police say
Police say the suspect and officer exchanged fire in the area of 52nd and Market streets Tuesday afternoon.
A suspect is dead and an officer is injured after they exchanged gunfire in North Long Beach Tuesday afternoon, according to police.
Police say officers responded around 3:15 p.m. to a report of a gunman in the area of 52nd Street and Atlantic Avenue.
When they got there, they saw the gunman and tried to get him to drop the weapon, police said, adding that they called a hostage negotiator and the mental health evaluation team to help.
But the gunman refused, prompting police to deploy their SWAT team, authorities said.
After a two-and-half hour standoff that shut down a stretch of Atlantic Avenue, the suspect and two officers exchanged gunfire, police said.
The suspect was struck multiple times by the gunfire and died at the scene, police said. His identity was not immediately released.
One of the officers was struck in the arm during the exchange, police said. He was taken to a local hospital where he is in stable condition, they added.
Police said they seized a suspects gun at the scene.
