Police arrest man suspected of copper thefts
Russel Libberton, 41, who is homeless, allegedly stole more than 100 pounds of precious metals, authorities said.
A 41-year-old man experiencing homelessness has been arrested for allegedly stealing copper and other metals, police said Wednesday.
Long Beach police say Russel Libberton, 41, allegedly stole more than 100 pounds of precious metals, including copper and brass.
Over the past few months, the LBPD has been investigating a recent increase in copper theft incidents, police said.
Following a tip from LA Crime Stoppers, officers identified Libberton as a suspect in the thefts, according to the LBPD.
On May 1, officers found Libberton in the 3000 block of Cherry Avenue and arrested him, police said.
Libberton was then arrested for a no-bail warrant, possession of burglary tools and possession of over 100 pounds of stolen precious metals, police said.
Officers believe the metals are connected to ongoing theft investigations in the area, police added.
In a statement Wednesday, LBPD Chief Wally Hebeish said copper theft βcan have a significant impact on our city infrastructure and cause disruptions to the services our residents rely on each day.β
