What’s good in the LBC: Paint and Sip, a yacht rave, a class on Palestinian cuisine and more
It's not Mother's Day, yet, but here are some events you can check out around town with or without mom this weekend.
April is almost over and that means we’ve been producing Watchdog for almost an entire month. We’d like to thank Jewels Long Beach and everyone who came out to our Hamburger’s Mary event last Friday. More events are in the works, so stay tuned.
But until then, there are plenty of things going on in our beautiful city from some boozy creative endeavors and boat parties to cultural education.
Here’s what’s good in Long Beach this weekend.
Cambodian New Year party (Friday)
The 3rd annual Cambodian New Year party will be held at Ten Mile Brewing on Friday from 5 to 9 p.m. A new crisp rice lager will debut — Battambang Lager — and various food vendors like Golden Skewer, Shlap Man, Chinitos Tacos and more. Traditional dance music will be playing to dance the night away, merch will be available for sale from Rep Cambodia Apparel and kids can get ballon twisters and their faces painted.

Snip n' Sip at Compound (Friday)
Have you ever wondered how to build a beautiful flower arrangement for a dinner party? Zaferia District’s art exhibit Compound hosts a monthly Snip n’ Sip floral building workshop series led by a rotating lineup of professional floral artists. This Friday’s event from 6 to 8 p.m. will be taught by Kessiah, owner and founder of Petals and Prickly's. The class is open to people with all skill levels and tickets are $75. Tickets include all fresh floral materials and tools to make a medium-size bouquet and one glass of wine. Tickets can be purchased here.

Paint and Sip Ceramics (Friday)
If ceramics is more your style, Trademark Brewing is hosting a Paint and Sip with Bixby Ceramics this Friday. Doors open at 6:45 p.m. and the class will start promptly at 7:15 p.m. Attendees will be able to paint a spring-themed mug to keep — no experience is necessary. Tickets are $30 and include all materials as well as a final kiln firing of your mug and instructions for how to paint the pre-selected image. Beers, hard seltzers, non-alcoholic beverages and food will be available for purchase from the Trademark Tap Room. Tickets can be purchased here.

‘Points of View’ movie premiere (Saturday)
The Art Theatre is hosting a movie premiere for the documentary “Points of View” Saturday at 7 p.m. The film follows the 10-year quest of Krys Benyamein to conquer Mt. Everest. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased here. All proceeds from the event benefit the local guides of Mt. Everest.

Yacht Rave (Saturday)
What’s better than having some drinks and dancing? Doing it on the water. Yacht Rave will host a rave on a three-story yacht this Saturday from 5 to 9 p.m. General admission tickets are $50 and include entrance and one complimentary product from a sponsor. VIP tickets are $100 and include a goodie bag as well as allow guests to skip food and drink lines. The four-hour rave will feature five DJs. Tickets can be purchased here.
The boat will leave from 435 Shoreline Village Drive.
Riverpark Coalition celebrates 4 years (Sunday)
Nonprofit Riverpark Coalition, which works to gain parkland/open space on Long Beach’s Westside, is hosting a celebration for its fourth anniversary. The event is free, but the coalition asks attendees to RSVP to [email protected] to allow them to plan for refreshments and craft supplies for kids. The event will include a meet and greet with the board, short educational films, crafts, a time for public input and more. It runs from 1:30 to 4 p.m. at the EXPO Arts Center in Bixby Knolls.

Learn about Palestinian cuisine (Sunday)
Chef Reem Assil, owner of Reem’s California in San Francisco and author of Arabiyya: Recipes from the Life of an Arab in Diaspora, will be at Kubo LB Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. discussing Palestinian cuisine staples, food practices, and connections between Palestinian and Filipino cultures. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased here. The Arabiyya cookbook will be available for purchase and signing.
