Police arrested a man experiencing homelessness for allegedly fatally assaulting another man last month.

Long Beach police say Zetty Jerome Welch, 49, allegedly assaulted a man in the 1800 block of Long Beach Boulevard around 8:20 p.m. on Aug. 1.

Long Beach Fire Department personnel took the victim to a local hospital in critical condition, according to authorities.

At the time of the assault, LBPD officers arrested Welch and booked him for battery with serious bodily injury, police said.

On Aug. 31, homicide detectives were notified that the victim died of his injuries, according to the LBPD.

The victim's identity is being withheld while the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner works to identify him and notify his next of kin, police said.

The L.A. County District Attorney's Office has since amended Welch's charges to murder, police added.

Welch is being held on $2 million bail, according to police.

The motive for the beating is still under investigation, police said.

Authorities are asking anyone with information on the incident to call LBPD Homicide Detectives Eric Thai or Chasen Contreras at 562-570-7244.
