Bicyclist killed in West Long Beach hit-and-run, police say
The man was riding westbound on Cowles Street when he was struck by an unknown vehicle near Santa Fe Avenue around 2:38 a.m. Monday.
Police are investigating the death of a man who was riding a bike in West Long Beach when he was hit by an unknown vehicle that then fled the scene early Monday morning.
Long Beach police say the victim was riding westbound on Cowles Street when he was struck by a vehicle that had turned eastbound onto Cowles from southbound Santa Fe Avenue around 2:38 a.m. The driver of the vehicle then fled the scene, police added.
Long Beach Fire Department personnel gave the bicyclist medical aid but he died at the scene, authorities said.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's office is currently working to identify the bicyclist, according to the LBPD.
Authorities are asking anyone who may have seen the crash to call the LBPD Collision Investigation Detail at 562-570-7355.
This is the 26th traffic fatality reported by the LBPD in 2026. Last year, the department reported 56 traffic-related fatalities from 53 crashes, making it the deadliest year on the road since at least 1990, when the city reported 51 deaths, according to LBPD data from a public records request by the Watchdog.
The LBPD reported 30 traffic fatalities by this time last year.
