Police are investigating the shooting deaths of two men in California Heights after one of the men allegedly started a shoot-out with officers early Saturday morning.

Long Beach police say officers responded to a home in the 3700 block of Gardenia Avenue around 1:41 a.m. following a shots call.

Shortly after arriving, the LBPD officers made contact with a man in the home, police said. After that man threatened to shoot them, they moved to a safe distance and called for the SWAT team, according to police.

The man then fired shots at officers, with one officer returning fire, police said.

It's unclear how many shots were fired, but no officers were injured in the exchange, according to the LBPD.

After SWAT entered the home, they found two dead men, both with gunshot wounds to their upper bodies, police said.

At this time, the circumstances of how each man died are still under investigation, police said Saturday.

Police recovered "multiple firearms and evidence" from the home as well, according to authorities.

The LBPD is currently reviewing the body-worn camera footage from the officers involved in the shooting and will "make that available to the public as soon as possible," police said in a statement Saturday.

The department is also conducting a "full and thorough multi-level review" of the shooting, and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office will conduct its own investigation as well, police said.

Authorities are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact LBPD detectives at 562-570-7244.
