Woman struck and killed while crossing street by Compton-Long Beach border, police say
Police say the woman was crossing the street at a marked crosswalk around 4 p.m. in the area of Long Beach and Greenleaf boulevards when she fell down and was struck by a car.
A woman was struck and killed by a car Friday afternoon while crossing the street by the Compton-Long Beach border, according to police.
Police say the woman was crossing the street at a marked crosswalk around 4 p.m. in the area of Long Beach and Greenleaf boulevards when she fell down.
That's when the driver of a 2009 Chevy HHR that was making a left turn from East Greenleaf Boulevard onto southbound Long Beach Boulevard hit her, police said.
Los Angeles Sheriff's Department deputies were first on the scene and rendered aid to the woman, according to the Long Beach Police Department.
When Compton Fire Department personnel arrived at the scene, they declared the woman dead, LBPD Lt. Danielle Quinones said in a statement Friday night.
She was identified as 75-year-old Elvira Cuellar of Compton, according to the LBPD.
The driver of the vehicle, meanwhile, remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation, police said. They added that impairment, distracted driving or speed do not appear to be a factor in the crash.
Detectives have responded to the scene to investigate, they added.
