The heat has arrived, and while summertime is about fun in the sun, we have a list of indoor events that will keep you cool this week.

This Friday marks the start of Dine LA Restaurant Week and we've got a handful of restuarants right here in Long Beach you should check out. Otherwise, we've got a list other events to tell you about β€” many of which will keep you out of the heat this week.

From live music shows around town to classes that teach a new skill, here's some events to start with.

MOLAA's Community Art Workshop (July 11)

The Museum of Latin American Art will host another community art workshop on July 11 at 6 p.m. focused on woodblock printmaking. Guest teacher and artist Ernesto Vazquez will instruct workshop goers on how to carve and print a design using traditional woodblock printing tools and methods. Tickets are $5.

Cool Crafts Roundup (July 11)

This one will expose you to the elements, but if you're looking for an outdoor family-friendly activity, Rancho Los Alamitos is hosting a Cool Crafts Roundup onJuly 11 from 1 to 4 p.m. Kids and adults can enjoy multiple crafting stations while learning some history at the Rancho. Admission is free and no reservations are needed. If you miss this one, there will be another opportunity on Aug. 8.

Dine LA Restaurant Week (July 12 - 26)

Dine LA Restaurant Week actually spans two weeks during which restaurants around LA County will feature specials and deals on menu items. Here's who is participating in Long Beach: Ammatoli, BO Beau Kitchen + Roof Tap, Cali Chilli, Michael's on Naples, Rakkan Ramen, and Ruth's Chris Steak House. The full list can be found here. Ammatoli and Michael's on Naples are offering four-course set menu dinners for $65 per person with options at both to add on wine pairings. Bo Beau will offer a three-course menu for $65, while Ruth's Chris will offer a three-course prix fixe menu for $80 per person. Cali Chilli will offer a three-course dinner for $45 per person and a $25 lunch menu. Rakkan Ramen will offer a lunch and dinner menu of $25 per person which includes any signature ramen with a omakase set. To find the menus for each restaurant, search the restaurant name on the Dine LA website and click "menu".

More events happening:


Thursday

  • Moonlight Movies on the Beach will play Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 at Long Beach City College's Liberal Arts Campus. The movie will start at sunset, between 8 and 8:30 p.m. Local food trucks and a kettle corn vendor will be on site and attended are permitted to bring their own food. Parking is free after 6 p.m., no reservations are needed.

Friday

  • The Good Bar Long Beach will host its first Emo Nite of the year from 10 p.m. to close for those 21 and over. No cover.
  • Disney's Newsies, a Broadway musical, will have its first show on Friday at 8 p.m. at Musical Theatre West. Tickets can be purchased here.

Saturday

  • The annual Catalina Ski Race, one of Long Beach's oldest traditions, kicks off Saturday. If you're interested in watching, the race will be live-streamed on Facebook or you can watch the start of the race in-person from the Junipero or Alamitos Beach areas at 9 a.m. Racers will finish at the mouth of the Los Angeles River, directly across from the Queen Mary along the bike path that extends towards Grissom Island. 
  • Beachwood Brewing is celebrating 13 years this Saturday at all five locations. There will be special giveaways, merch and new brews like the Hyperspeed IPA. At the 2ND & PCH location, there will be Beachwood temporary tattoos and at Bixby Knolls, Shady Grove BBQ will be vending starting at noon. The Blendery will also have exclusive sour beers available.
  • Dear Long Beach is back at Grey LB this Saturday at 7 p.m. The event will include live performances, DJ's and art. Tickets are $17. More information here.
  • Altar Society will host a group art show called While West this Saturday in its upstairs event space. The event will run from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. The event will display the art of over 40 artists and include DJ sets, musical performances, and tarot readings. Follow their events here.

Sunday

  • Partake Collective will host a Classic French Macaron Class on Sunday at 5 p.m. No experience is required, all equipment and ingredients will be provided. Tickets are priced at $59 per person (plus fees) and can be purchased here.
