A 17-year-old boy was hospitalized after being shot Sunday while walking along the Los Angeles River in Long Beach, according to police.

It's unclear exactly what part of the river the shooting took place or when, but police say officers responded to a local hospital shortly around 5:49 p.m. Sunday after the teen arrived with a gunshot wound to the lower body.

There, the teen explained to officers that he was walking somewhere along the riverbed when he heard a loud noise that sounded like a gunshot, police said.

That's when he realized he'd been struck in the lower body, authorities said.

Though officers canvassed the riverbed, they were not able to locate a crime scene, police said.

Suspect information and a motive for the shooting are under investigation, police said.
