Detectives are investigating a shooting in North Long Beach that left a 16-year-old boy dead and another person injured Sunday afternoon, authorities announced Monday.

Police say the teenager’s uncle drove him to the 3300 block 67th Street where he got out of the car and returned a short time later with a group of people following him.

That’s when, according to police, someone shot him multiple times.

The gunfire also struck the uncle’s car, prompting him to drive away and call police, authorities said.

Officers responded to the area around 2:40 p.m. and found the teenager lying in the street with gunshot wounds to the upper and lower body, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

Despite efforts by authorities to save his life, he died at the scene, police said. He was only identified by police as a Bell resident due to his age.

The uncle, meanwhile, was treated at the scene for a minor injury to his upper body, though police said they are not sure whether it was caused by the gunfire or debris.

Investigators are looking into a motive for the shooting and working to identify the group, which ran away from the scene before officers arrived, the department said.

Police are asking that anyone with more information contact detectives at 562-570-7244.
