Scratch This! just updated its helping-paw list
Here's how to get resources for animals in need and the humans who love them in Long Beach.
If anyone needs a paw with a medical emergency, low-cost spay/neuter, community cat trapping, or finding the best friend ever to adopt or foster, Long Beach and the surrounding communities have resources scattered around the area. Scratch This! has a link at the end of each article that will take you to the list.
The list is by no means complete, as far as I know, but I just updated the resources and just wanted to remind you that it’s there, in case you don’t scroll all the way down the column in case you fear that you’ll be tempted to adopt one of the pets along the way. (Fostering’s often an option, but I don’t want to twist your foreleg.)
Follow this link to the resources. As always, it’s at the end of the column, too!
YOURS DROOLY
After all that information, we need a little silly stuff to cleanse the furballs from the palate, and few do silly better than Feline Good Social Club (FGSC). It’s not so long ago that cat ladies were mocked and ridiculed, but as animal consciousness evolved, cat ladies became lovable and admirable (like cats). Now, many of us wear the badge with pride, along with the fur stuck to our butts when we get up from the armchair. Some guys even refer to themselves as cat ladies.
FGSC is hosting a fur-ociously festive fete on Saturday to celebrate all of us cat ladies and the objects of our affection, several of whom will be there to entice you into adopting them. See Tail waggin’ and nose-booping events for tickets.
Here’s a preview of coming distractions, all ready to go home with you! Access this link for adoption applications.

“Some cats have all the luck,” one of FGSC’s volunteers recently said of Polly. But actually, a cat like Polly who’s been through the wringer and has received the kindness and care from FGSC is very lucky indeed. The FGSC folks nicknamed Polly The Comeback Queen because after surviving motherhood and illness, she’s become FGSC’S lead snuggler. Polly has been among FGSC’s most challenging residents as far as medical treatment goes. She received veterinary care for her illnesses, recovered, and found sanctuary and plenty of affection at FGSC. Sadly, though, she had to be placed in a foster home after a recent diagnosis of FeLV, a feline-specific virus. Yet through all her trials, Polly remains an incredibly sweet and resilient kitty who thrives on the companionship of humans and other cats. FGSC would love to see her receive the same attentive and loving care that she provided to her precious little ones. The goal is to find her a forever home that can cater to the special needs of a kitty like her.

Nibbles is a three-year veteran at the club. She is a unique soul with a specific medical journey — she also has FeLV — and a spirit as adorable as her name. When Nibbles came to the lounge earlier this year, she was at first unsure of her new home. After some time, she realized she has access to endless pets, attention and toys to play with at the lounge, so she has adjusted happily. She will definitely add some noble charm to her furrever home. Book a session to meet this royal lady!

Christmas has passed, but there’s always time for reindeer games. Prancer will show you how to play! Prancer’s a longhair kitten heartthrob from FGSC’s Reindeer litter. He’s social, playful and healthy as a horse. Or a reindeer.
TAIL-WAGGIN' AND NOSE-BOOPIN' EVENTS
Fourth Annual Long Beach Pet Fair

Step right up, folks, and enjoy some family fun, whether your family members have two, three or four legs! Join us Saturday, April 25 at the 4th Annual Long Beach Pet Fair for a day dedicated to animal rescue and community fun. The Fair is organized by The Little Lion Foundation and The Cat Cove. This exciting event brings together local rescuers and animal lovers to help cats, dogs and rabbits find their perfect forever families. Check them all out at the rescue booths, and support local, small businesses by shopping at their tables. Dogs must be on leashes that are 6 feet long or shorter, and if the cat, rabbit, snake or whatever wants to come, too, they must be in a carrier.
The 4th Annual Long Beach Pet Fair takes place April 25, 10 a.m.–5 p.m., at the Long Beach Exchange, 4150 McGowen St., Long Beach.
Long Beach’s Favorite Pet entries extension

Your furry, feathered, scaly or shelled buddy now has up to April 26 to nip you on the ankle and remind you to submit their photo and info to this great competition! Entries cost $10, which will be donated to Long Beach Animal Care Services. Information is available here. Contest is open to Long Beach residents only.
National Cat Lady Day Celebration

The term “cat lady” is no longer taken on as a slur or a taunt even if it’s meant as one, and good for us! Cat ladies — men, too, who love cats call themselves cat ladies or at least cat dads — are people to celebrate, and that’s exactly what the Feline Good Social Club will do this month! Put on your black pants with the shed fur all over the seat and legs, and join in the fun at Long Beach’s first cat lounge. There, you’ll be in cat-lady heaven as over 40 sweet and adoptable cats swarm all over you. You can have your photo taken at the photo booth and cement your status as an official cat lady. More info and ticket sales here! Please don’t bring your own cat—you can always adopt one from Feline Good Social Club!
The National Cat Lady Day Celebration takes place April 26, noon–5 p.m., at the Feline Good Social Club, 301 Atlantic Ave., Long Beach. Ticket prices $30.
Pet Loss and Illness Support Group

The worst day in the life you share with a pet is the day you have to say goodbye forever. Grief is personal on the one hand, and on the other hand, you have a lot of company who get what you’re going through. Helen Sanders CatPAWS rescue gets it, too, and offers a space for anyone who also gets it, who’ll never say to you, “But it was just a cat.” Or a dog, or a rabbit, or a horse, or a goldfish. The members of this group will listen, connect, and support you, and you’ll do the same for them.
The Pet Loss and Illness Support Group takes place Saturday, May 16, 5100 E. The Toledo, Long Beach. No cost for the meeting, but let the leads know that you’re coming here.
