Officer fires at suspect holding pellet gun in North Long Beach, police say

The shooting took place after officers responded to reports of a person with a gun near the 5500 block of Atlantic Avenue, but there were no injuries and a suspect is in custody, police say.

Police are investigating after an officer shot at a man holding a pellet gun in North Long Beach Thursday afternoon, according to police.

Long Beach police officers were dispatched to the 5500 block of Atlantic Avenue, near the Bristol Hotel, at around 1:32 p.m. Thursday following reports of a person with a gun, according to Long Beach Police Department spokesperson Allison Gallagher.

The officers arrived at the scene and encounter a person with what appeared to be a gun, Gallagher said.

Officers told the person to put the gun down, and then at some point one officer fired multiple shots at the suspect, Gallagher said. The officerβ€˜s shots did not hit the suspect, according to the LBPD.

There were no injuries and the suspect was then arrested. The LBPD did not have booking details immediately available.

It was later determined the suspect had a pellet gun, according to the LBPD.

The department is conducting a "multi-level investigation" into the circumstances of the shooting, Gallagher said.

The officers were also wearing body-camera footage, which will be reviewed by the LBPD and made available to the public at a later date, according to police.

Atlantic Avenue remains closed as of press time.
