A 40-year-old homeless man has been arrested on suspicion of fatally shooting another unhoused man back in October, police said Thursday.

Long Beach police said Freddie Lamont Key, Jr., 40, fatally shot Dajuan Hunt, 39, on Oct. 23.

Officers responded to the railroad right-of-way near the 5300 block of Cherry Avenue at about 9:45 p.m. on the night of the shooting and found Hunt with a gunshot wound to the upper body, police said.

Officers gave him medical aid until relieved by Long Beach Fire Department paramedics, who then took Hunt to a local hospital where he died of his injuries, according to authorities.

Through their investigation, homicide detectives identified Key as a suspect, police said. On Dec. 10, LBPD Special Investigations Division detectives arrested Key in the 2600 block of South Street, police added.

Police booked him for an outstanding warrant and then rebooked him for murder, according to authorities.

His bail was set at $2 million, police said.

Detectives presented the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office for filing consideration, police added.

The LBPD said the motive and circumstances of the shooting remain under investigation.

Police are asking anyone with information regarding this incident to call Homicide Detectives Leticia Gamboa and Jared Asato at 562-570-7244.
