A 58-year-old man experiencing homelessness has been arrested on suspicion of fatally assaulting another unhoused man in Long Beach back in March, police announced Thursday.

Long Beach police said Thongsay Ky, 58, assaulted Chamrong Sok, 52, on March 11.

Officers responded to a local hospital around 7:32 p.m. that night and found Sok with injuries to his upper body, according to police.

Police said Sok was "uncooperative in providing details of the incident," though he did tell officers that he had been assaulted "in a parking lot in the area of Anaheim Street."

Sok died of his injuries at a local hospital on April 24, police said. A month later, on May 22, the Los Angeles County Department of the Medical Examiner ruled Sok's death a homicide, according to authorities.

After investigating, detectives identified Thongsay Ky, a 58-year-old homeless man, as a suspect in Sok's assault, police said.

LBPD Special Investigations Division detectives arrested Ky Wednesday morning inside his vehicle near the 1400 block of South Harbor Scenic Drive, according to police.

Ky was booked for murder and his bail was set at $2 million, police said.

The motive for the assault remains under investigation, police added.

Detectives will present to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for filing consideration, according to the LBPD.

Police are asking anyone with information regarding this incident to call Homicide Detective Michael Hutchinson at 562-570-7244.
