Police arrest 19-year-old in connection to fatal shooting in North Long Beach
Police say Jeffrey Poorman, 44, was shot early Tuesday morning in the 5900 block of Lime Avenue.
Police say they’ve arrested a 19-year-old they believe to be responsible for a shooting in North Long Beach Tuesday morning that left a man dead.
Long Beach resident Mathew De Diego was taken into custody in connection to the slaying of 44-year-old Long Beach resident Jeffrey Poorman, authorities said.
“In less than seven hours, LBPD personnel identified and safely arrested this violent murder suspect, once again demonstrating the focus we will maintain on capturing those willing to victimize others,” Long Beach Police Chief Wally said in a statement Wednesday morning. “We do not tolerate gun violence in our community. Our detectives, officers, and professional staff are working around the clock to keep our city safe."
Poorman was inside his garage in the 5900 block of Lime Avenue with De Diego around 1:30 p.m. when the 19-year-old shot him multiple times in the upper body, police said.
De Diego fled, while Poorman died at the scene, they added.
Detectives and several officers responded to the area to investigate, police said.
They identified De Diego as a suspect and later located him in the 5000 block of Gardenia Avenue, police said.
He was arrested on suspicion of murder and his bail was set at $3 million, police said. The case against him will be presented to the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office this week for filing consideration, police said.
It’s not yet clear why De Diego shot Poorman or how it was they knew each other. Police are asking additional witnesses to contact detectives at 562-570-7244.
