Pedestrian killed in Zaferia last week, police say
The man was walking outside a crosswalk on Redondo Avenue near Anaheim Street when he was hit, according to authorities.
Police are investigating the death of a pedestrian who was hit in Zaferia on the night of March 11.
Long Beach police said Daren Duane Roland, 65, of Long Beach, was walking northbound outside a crosswalk on Redondo Avenue around 7:30 p.m. when he was hit by a person driving a 2011 Toyota Camry westbound on Anaheim Street.
Long Beach Fire Department personnel took Roland to a local hospital, according to authorities. Roland died of his injuries the next day, police said. The LBPD learned of his death on Monday, police added.
The driver of the Camry remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, according to police.
Police said they do not believe that speed, distracted driving or impaired driving were factors in the crash.
Police are asking anyone who may have seen the crash to call Detective Efrain Pineda Long Beach Police Department's Collision Investigation Detail at 562-570-7355.
This is the 15th traffic fatality reported by the LBPD in 2026. Last year, the department reported 56 traffic-related fatalities from 53 crashes, making it the deadliest year on the road since at least 1990, when the city reported 51 deaths, according to LBPD data from a public records request by the Watchdog.
The LBPD reported six traffic fatalities by this time last year.
