Police are investigating the death of a woman who was hit by a car in the Wrigley neighborhood early Wednesday morning.

Long Beach police say the woman was walking southbound in the east crosswalk of Pacific Coast Highway against a red light around 4:50 a.m. when a 2019 Chevy Malibu driven by a 19-year-old Long Beach resident entered the intersection with a green light. The Malibu then hit the pedestrian, according to police.

Long Beach Fire Department personnel took the woman to a local hospital, where she died of her injuries, authorities said.

The woman's identity is being withheld while the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's office works to identify her.

The driver of the Malibu stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators, police said.

Police said they don’t believe impaired driving, distracted driving or excessive speed were factors in the crash.

Authorities are asking anyone who may have seen the crash to call LBPD Collision Investigation Detail Detective David Doughtery at 562-570-7355.

This is the 25th traffic fatality reported by the LBPD in 2026. Last year, the department reported 56 traffic-related fatalities from 53 crashes, making it the deadliest year on the road since at least 1990, when the city reported 51 deaths, according to LBPD data from a public records request by the Watchdog.

The LBPD reported 20 traffic fatalities by this time last year.
