Pedestrian killed in Central Long Beach crash, police say
This is the 44th traffic fatality reported by the LBPD this year.
Police are investigating a crash in Central Long Beach that killed a pedestrian early Tuesday morning.
Long Beach police say the man was crossing Anaheim Street southbound at Junipero Avenue in a marked crosswalk around 5:38 a.m. when he was hit by a person driving a 2010 Toyota Prius that was headed eastbound on Anaheim.
Long Beach Fire Department personnel gave the man medical aid and took him to a local hospital where he later died of his injuries, according to authorities.
The man's identity is being withheld while the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner works to notify his next of kin, police said.
The driver of the Prius remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, according to the LBPD.
Police said they do not believe speed, distracted driving or impaired driving were factors in the crash.
Authorities are asking anyone who might have seen the crash to contact LBPD Collision Investigation Detail Detective Pineda at 562-570-5520.
This is the 44th traffic fatality reported by the LBPD in 2026. Last year, the department reported 56 traffic-related fatalities from 53 crashes, making it the deadliest year on the road since at least 1990, when the city reported 51 deaths, according to LBPD data from a public records request by the Watchdog.
The LBPD reported 45 traffic fatalities by this time last year.
