Police are investigating the death of a woman who was hit by a car in North Long Beach Friday afternoon.

The woman was crossing Long Beach Boulevard eastbound in a marked crosswalk at 68th Street around 12:16 p.m. Friday when she was hit by a person driving a 2018 Chevrolet Camaro traveling southbound on Long Beach Boulevard in the number one lane, according to Long Beach police. The driver of the Camaro then fled the scene, but returned about 40 minutes later, police said.

Long Beach Fire Department personnel took the woman to a local hospital for treatment, where she later died of her injuries, according to authorities.

The woman's identity is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's office, according to police.

The driver of the Camaro, identified as Eric Dewayne Moody, 65, of Los Angeles, was arrested and taken to Long Beach City Jail, police said.

Moody was booked on one count of vehicular manslaughter and one count of felony hit-and-run, according to the LBPD. His bail was set at $50,000, police added.

At this time, police say speed, distracted and impaired driving do not appear to be factors in the collision.

Police are asking anyone who saw the crash to call LBPD Collision Investigation Detail Detective Efrain Pineda at 562-570-7355.

This is 38th traffic fatality reported by the LBPD this year. There were 40 traffic fatalities in the city in 2024, according to police statistics.
