Long Beach police say they’re investigating the death of a pedestrian who was hit by a car in a parking lot at the 2200 block of Bellflower Boulevard on Nov. 2.

Long Beach resident Grace Edwards, 19, was walking in a parking lot around 3:55 p.m. that day when she was struck by a 2015 Lexus IS250 driven by a 39-year-old city resident as it was pulling out of a parking stall, police said.

The Lexus driver remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation, police said.

Long Beach Fire Department personnel gave Edwards medical aid and then took her to a local hospital in critical condition, according to authorities. She died of her injuries on Nov. 5, police said, adding that the department learned of her death the next day.

Police said that at this time, they believe distracted driving is a contributing factor in the collision.

The LBPD is asking anyone who saw the crash to call the LBPD Collision Investigation Detail Detective at 562-570-7355.

This is the 50th traffic fatality reported by the LBPD this year, making it the deadliest year since at least 2013, according to reports. The city averaged 27 traffic-related deaths from 2013 to 2019, police data shows.

In 2020, traffic-related fatalities reached a high of 49 and then dipped to 45 deaths in both 2021 and 2022, data shows. That figure dropped to 36 deaths in 2023 but then jumped back up to 40 last year.
