Parents tortured, murdered 14-month-old child, police say
Long Beach police said Alfredo Munoz, 40, and Kelly Munoz, 34, repeatedly abused their 14-month-old child, leading to her death.
A man and woman have been charged with murder for allegedly fatally abusing a 14-month old girl, police said Tuesday.
Long Beach police said Alfredo Munoz, 40, and Kelly Munoz, 34, repeatedly abused a 14-month-old girl, leading to her death earlier this month. The two individuals are the girl's father and stepmother, respectively, police added.
LBPD officers first learned of the abuse on Nov. 7, when they responded to a local hospital regarding a possible child abuse incident, police said. There, a 14-month-old girl was unresponsive and showed signs of trauma, according to police.
Later that day, hospital staff told officers that the girl was not expected to survive, according to authorities. The girl died of her injuries three days later, police said. The department is withholding her identity because of her age.
Following a two-week investigation, LBPD homicide detectives determined the child had been exposed to "on-going abuse" from her father and stepmother, police said.
On Tuesday, LBPD officers arrested Alfredo and Kelly Munoz, according to police. They were booked into the Long Beach City Jail for murder, torture and child abuse causing death.
They were booked with no bail, according to the LBPD.
Detectives will present the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorneyβs Office next week for filing consideration, police said.
Police are asking anyone with information on this case to call Homicide Detectives Ethan Shear and Kelsey Myers at 562-570-7244.
