Police say they made an arrest following a shooting in North Long Beach early Thursday morning that left a man dead.

Officers were called to the 2000 block of Harding Street around 5:17 a.m. after reports of a shooting, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

When officers arrived they found a man with a gunshot wound to his upper body, police said. Long Beach Fire Department personnel pronounced the victim dead at the scene, according to authorities.

Police said they did not identify the victim because the Los Angeles County Department of the Medical Examiner is still working to notify next of kin.

While detectives were investigating the shooting, LBPD officers were sent to the area of 49th Street and Del Amo Boulevard regarding a person who was experiencing a possible mental health crisis, police said.

There, police found Garrett Remillard, 24, of Long Beach, who made statements connecting himself to the shooting, according to the LBPD. Detectives then determined Remillard as the suspect responsible for the shooting, police added.

Officers arrested Remillard and booked him at the Long Beach Police Jail for murder, according to police. His bail was set at $2 million, police said.

While police said that Remillard and the victim knew each other, detectives are still investigating the motive and circumstances that led to the shooting.

Police are asking anyone with information on the shooting to call Homicide Detectives Ethan Shear and Kelsey Myers at 562-570-7244.
