Police are investigating the death of a motorcyclist who hit a bicyclist head-on Friday night.

Long Beach police say a man was riding a motorcycle southbound on the San Gabriel River Trail, south of the 405 freeway, around 8:12 p.m. when he hit a man riding a bicycle head-on. Witnesses said the motorcyclist was speeding and not wearing a helmet, according to the LBPD.

The collision ejected both men from their bikes, police added.

After bystanders gave each man aid, Long Beach Fire Department personnel took both men to a local hospital, each in critical condition, according to authorities.

The motorcyclist later died of his injuries, police said.

The identity of the motorcyclist is being withheld while the Los Angeles County Department of the Medical Examiner works to identify him, police added.

At this time, police said they do not believe that impaired or distracted driving were contributing factors in the crash.

Police are asking anyone with information about the crash to call Collision Investigation Detective Joseph Johnson at 562-570-7355.

This is the 16th traffic fatality reported by the LBPD in 2026. Last year, the department reported 56 traffic-related fatalities from 53 crashes, making it the deadliest year on the road since at least 1990, when the city reported 51 deaths, according to LBPD data from a public records request by the Watchdog.

The LBPD reported six traffic fatalities by this time last year.
