Police say they’re investigating the death of a motorcyclist who crashed near Downey Avenue and South Street Thursday night.

The motorcyclist and a female passenger were riding a 2008 Honda CBR westbound on South Street toward Downey Avenue around 9:24 p.m. when he hit a 2012 Toyota 4Runner that was turning left to travel northbound on Downey Avenue, according to Long Beach police.

LBPD officers arriving on scene found the motorcyclist in the southbound lanes of Downey Avenue, north of South Street, and the passenger lying on the west sidewalk of Downey Avenue, near the motorcyclist, police said.

Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel determined the motorcyclist died at the scene, according to authorities. Long Beach Fire Department personnel took the passenger to a local hospital to be treated for her injuries, police said.

No other injuries were reported, according to the LBPD.

Police identified the deceased motorcyclist as Jonathon Porras, 20, of Long Beach.

At this time, police say speed and distracted driving are being investigated as potential factors in the crash.

Police are asking anyone who saw the crash to call LBPD Collision Investigation Detail Detective Efrain Pineda at 562-570-7355.

This is 28th traffic fatality reported by the LBPD this year. There were 40 traffic fatalities in the city in 2024, according to police statistics.

Editor's note: This story has been updated to correct the direction the motorcycle was traveling after the LBPD misreported.
