Man threatens person with replica firearm, prompts SWAT response, police say
Police used a K9 to take Sokhom Yay into custody on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and resisting arrest.
A man has been arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and resisting arrest after pointing a replica weapon at a person and prompting a SWAT response Saturday night, police said.
Long Beach police said Sokhom Yay was arguing with another person around 6:18 p.m. in the 500 block of Orange Avenue when he pointed what appeared to be a firearm at the person.
Yay then moved to the 1400 Block of East Ninth Street, where LBPD officers found him in a garage, according to police.
Officers then established a perimeter around the garage and attempted to de-escalate the situation, police said. SWAT resources responded to the scene, as well as a Mental Health Team clinician, police added.
After about three hours of verbal negotiations, which included the Mental Health Team clinician, Yay still refused to surrender, according to authorities.
That's when LBPD officers deployed a K9, police said. Officers then took Yay into custody without further incident, according to police.
After medically clearing Yay at a local hospital, officers booked him at the jail for assault with a deadly weapon and resisting arrest, police said.
Yay's bail was set at $30,000, authorities said.
Multiple "replica firearms" were also recovered at the scene, police said. An LBPD spokesperson confirmed that none of the recovered firearms were functional.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing, according to the LBPD.
