Man stabbed to death during fight inside his Long Beach home, police say
Police say the suspect, identified as 21-year-old Long Beach resident Jonathan Sandoval, fatally stabbed one man and used brass knuckles to strike another.
Detectives are investigating a stabbing near Long Beach’s Rose Park neighborhood that left one man dead Thursday afternoon.
Long Beach Police say 21-year-old Long Beach resident Jonathan Sandoval and another person were at the home of 41-year-old Cristian Varguez in the 800 block of Cherry Avenue just before 4 p.m. when a fight broke out between them.
At some point during the fight, Sandoval used a knife to stab Varguez in the upper body and brass knuckles to strike the other man, police said. Sandoval then left the scene, they added.
Long Beach Fire personnel responded to Varguez’s home and found him in critical condition, police said.
LBFD personnel rendered aid before taking him to a local hospital where he died from his injuries, according to authorities.
The other man who was struck in the upper body, meanwhile, suffered an injury that did not appear to be life-threatening, police said.
While officers investigated the scene, Sandoval turned himself in at the Long Beach Police Department’s station in Downtown and he was taken into custody on suspicion of murder and assault with a deadly weapon, authorities said. His bail was set at $2 million, police said.
Sandoval, Varguez and the other man all knew each other prior to the fight, police said. However, they did not specify the nature of their relationship.
The case against Sandoval will be presented to the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office next week for filing consideration, police said.
