A man was shot early Sunday morning in Downtown Long Beach when his gun went off during a struggle for it with a security guard, police said.

Police say the man and his group were arguing with another group around 1:32 a.m. in the 100 block of Linden Avenue, just east of Downtown Long Beach.

A security guard at the time noticed the man had a gun on him and tried to take it away, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

While trying to disarm him, the gun went off and struck the man in the upper body, police said.

Everyone dispersed after the gun went off, police said. But a short time later, the man who’d been shot walked into a hospital for treatment, police added.

Authorities said they recovered the man’s gun and took him into custody in connection with the earlier incident, but police did not give further details on his arrest.

The investigation is ongoing, they added.
