Man arrested on suspicion of killing man in August, police say
Police say Hector Perez, 32, of Lynwood, was responsible for the fatal shooting of Ali Phannix, 43, in the 600 block of East South Street.
Long Beach police say they've arrested a suspect believed to be responsible for the fatal shooting of a homeless man in August.
Hector Perez, 32, of Lynwood, allegedly shot and killed Ali Phannix, 43, on Aug. 18, according to the Long Beach Police Department.
Authorities found Phannix unresponsive and not breathing just before 7 a.m. that day in the 600 block of East South Street. He had been shot several times in the upper body, according to police.
Despite efforts by authorities to save his life, Phannix died at the scene, police said.
Homicide detectives began investigating Phannix’s slaying and identified Perez as a possible suspect, police said.
On Monday, detectives secured a warrant to arrest Perez, who was already in custody of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department on unrelated charges, according to the LBPD.
He has since been rebooked on suspicion of murder and his bail was set at $2.05 million, police said.
Detectives are still looking into a motive, though it doesn’t appear to have been a random crime, as police say Perez and Phannix were acquaintances.
Police ask anyone with more information to contact detectives at 562-570-7244.
