Man arrested in connection with deadly 2021 shooting at North Long Beach encampment, police say
Police say Andrew Reyna, 47, fatally shot Samuel Villalba, 64, at an encampment in North Long Beach on Jan. 10, 2021.
Police say they’ve arrested a 47-year-old Lakewood man they believe took part in a deadly shooting at a North Long Beach encampment in 2021.
Detectives took Andrew Reyna, 47, of Lakewood into custody Wednesday in connection to the slaying of Samuel Villalba, 64, of Long Beach on Jan. 10, 2021, according to the Long Beach Police Department.
Villalba, who lived at the encampment, was shot multiple times that day in the upper body, according to police. Despite efforts by Long Beach Fire personnel to save his life, he died at the scene, they added.
The suspects, meanwhile, fled the scene toward Cherry Avenue, police said witnesses told them at the time.
Eventually, detectives identified Reyna as a suspect in the shooting and secured a warrant for his arrest, authorities said.
Reyna was located Wednesday at a motel in Lynwood and taken into custody on suspicion of murder, police said. His bail was set at $2 million.
Police did not elaborate further on the circumstances of the fatal shooting or a motive, though they previously said it appeared to gang-related.
They also did not say what led them to identify Reyna as a suspect in the deadly shooting, whether they’re still looking for more suspects, and, if so, what alleged role Reyna played in the crime.
Police continue to ask anyone with more information to contact detectives 562-570-7244.
