Long Beach resident John Higginbotham shot his neighbor multiple times in the upper body around 12:37 p.m. in the 700 block of East First Street, authorities said.
Officers responded to the scene and found the 64-year-old‘s neighbor with multiple gunshot wounds. They rendered aid until Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived and took over, police said, but the man died at the scene.
The victim's identity has not been released as the Los Angeles Medical Examiner’s office works to notify his relatives.
Officers, meanwhile, located Higginbotham near the crime scene and took him into custody on suspicion of murder, according to the LBPD. His bail was set at $2 million, police said.
It’s not yet clear why Higginbotham shot his neighbor, with police saying a motive is still under investigation.
Detectives will present the case against Higginbotham to the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office later this week for filing consideration, the department said.
