Police say the man accidentally shot himself in the lower body while fighting with someone in the 400 block of West Fifth Street Monday evening.

Man accidentally shoots himself during fight in Downtown Long Beach, police say

A man was hospitalized Monday evening after accidentally shooting himself during a fight near Downtown Long Beach, police said.

Long Beach police say the man was fighting with another person in the 400 block of West Fifth Street around 7:46 p.m.

At some point during the fight, the man’s gun accidentally went off, according to the LBPD, striking him in the lower body. The other person he was fighting then left the area, police said.

Officers responded to the scene and rendered aid to the man into, police said.

Long Beach Fire personnel arrived soon after and took him the man to a local hospital for further treatment, according to authorities, who added that his wound is not considered life-threatening.

Officers, meanwhile, recovered the firearm at the scene, police said.

Police did not say what prompted the fight between the man and the other person or whether they knew each other. The investigation is ongoing, according to the LBPD.
