Man, 73, dies of injuries from April assault and robbery, police say
The attack happened as the man was entering his home near Downtown on April 20, according to authorities.
A 73-year-old man has died of injuries he sustained when he was assaulted and robbed in April, police said Tuesday.
Jose Eduardo Viveros, 73, of Long Beach was trying to enter his home in the 800 block of Elm Avenue when a group of three or four men and possibly one woman assaulted and robbed him, according to Long Beach police.
The assailants are believed to have remained in the general area after the attack, police added.
Long Beach Fire Department personnel took Viveros to a local hospital where he was treated for a spinal cord injury, according to authorities.
Viveros died on Sept. 17, police said.
On Dec. 23, the Los Angeles County Department of the Medical Examiner told LBPD detectives that Viveros' death was a homicide, caused by blunt force trauma he received during the assault, police added.
Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident to call Homicide Detectives Ethan Shear or Kelsey Myers at 562-570-7244.
There were 28 murders and non-negligent manslaughter incidents in Long Beach this year, down 26.3% from 2024, according to LBPD data. There were also 2,026 aggravated assaults in the city this year, down 3.9% from 2024. And there were 795 robberies in the city during 2025, 30% fewer than last year, police statistics show.
