Over three years after the former Sears location in Los Altos shuttered for good, the massive retail space in the Los Altos shopping center will reopen Friday, Oct. 18 as the Bay Area Sports Basement location opens its doors to Long Beach.

Sports Basement has been readying the space since last year and signs on the windows of the sporting goods retailer Wednesday announced that customers would be allowed in Friday morning.

The closure of the Sears location in the shopping center at the intersection of Bellflower Boulevard and Stearns Street came amid a wave of shuttering of both Sears and K-Mark locations across the country in 2021.

The Los Altos location will be the chain’s 13th location and become the second Southern California Sports Basement, joining its shop in Fountain Valley.

Sports Basement started in 1998 in San Francisco and offers rentals as well as new and “pre-loved” purchases of sports and outdoor gear like snowboards, tents and kayaks. Priding itself as being a “hub for the community,” the retailer also offers guided trips and is known to let community groups reserve space in its retail stores for meetings, movie screenings, art galleries and even yoga classes.

The former Sears location includes three stories of retail space and a basement so there could be plenty of community space to go around.
