The Long Beach Police Department will hold a DUI/Driver License checkpoint in its East Division area on Thursday, June 26.

This area is the department's largest patrol division and is bounded by Del Amo Boulevard to the north; the Pacific Ocean shoreline to the south; Orange County cities to the east; and Cherry Avenue and the City of Signal Hill to the west, according to the LBPD.

The LBPD determines checkpoint locations using data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes, police said. The main purpose of these checkpoints is to "promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off the road," the department said.

Impaired driving can include being under of the influence of alcohol as well as prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs and marijuana, both medicinal and recreational.

A first-time DUI conviction can lead to an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license, according to the LBPD.

Funding for the LBPD DUI checkpoint program comes from a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
