LBPD to hold DUI checkpoint this Friday
The checkpoint will be active in the department's South Division area from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m.

The Long Beach Police Department will hold a DUI/Driver License checkpoint in its South Division area on Friday.
This area runs from Anaheim Street to Harbor Scenic Drive and from the Los Angeles River to Cherry Avenue, according to the LBPD.
The LBPD determines checkpoint locations using data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes, police said. The main purpose of these checkpoints is to "promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off the road," the department said.
Impaired driving can include being under of the influence of alcohol as well as prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs and marijuana, both medicinal and recreational.
A first-time DUI conviction can lead to an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license, according to the LBPD.
Funding for the LBPD DUI checkpoint program comes from a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
