LBPD to hold DUI checkpoint in East Long Beach Thursday
The checkpoint will be active from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m.
The Long Beach Police Department will hold a DUI/Driver License checkpoint in its East Division area on Thursday, Aug. 21.
This area is the department's largest patrol division and is bounded by Del Amo Boulevard to the north; the Pacific Ocean shoreline to the south; Orange County cities to the east; and Cherry Avenue and the City of Signal Hill to the west, according to the LBPD.
The LBPD determines checkpoint locations using data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes, police said.
Impaired driving can include being under of the influence of alcohol as well as prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs and marijuana, both medicinal and recreational.
“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” LBPD Commander Jeremy Boshnack said in an Aug. 19 statement. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”
A first-time DUI conviction can lead to an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license, according to the LBPD.
Funding for the city's DUI checkpoint program comes from a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
