Firefighters extinguish 2nd-alarm blaze in Downtown Long Beach, authorities say
Officials say the fire happened at an abandoned building in the 900 block of Pine Avenue Wednesday morning.
Heavy smoke billowed up into the Long Beach sky Wednesday morning as fire crews worked to extinguish a second-alarm blaze at an abandoned building in Downtown, according to authorities.
Fire officials say crews were sent to the 900 block of Pine Avenue around 6 a.m. where the abandoned building had ignited.
The crews entered the building in an effort to put out the flames, but they soon realized there was a gas leak and exited, Long Beach Fire Department spokesperson Capt. Jake Heflin said.
The crews instead took a “defensive” position outside the building and put out the fire from there, Heflin said.
No injuries were reported, according to Heflin, but the roof of the building partially collapsed and it‘s the structural integrity was damaged.
As of 8 a.m., crews were still working to put out any smoldering spots and conducting extensive overhaul on the building, Heflin said.
Long Beach’s utility department responded to help with the gas leak, Heflin said.
