Driver dies after crashing through backyard of North Long Beach home, police say
Police say the driver crashed into the fence of a home in the 5300 block of Cerritos Avenue around 6 p.m. before coming to a stop in the backyard.
A man died Friday evening after crashing into the backyard of a North Long Beach home, police said.
Long Beach police say the driver crashed into the fence of a home in the 5300 block of Cerritos Avenue around 6 p.m. before coming to a stop in the backyard.
When officers arrived shortly after, they ordered the man to step out of the car and then handcuffed him “as part of the investigation,” according to police.
The LBPD did not elaborate on whether he was detained or had been arrested on suspicion of any crime.
After police handcuffed the man, Long Beach Fire personnel rendered aid to him and then took him to a hospital where he died, police said.
His identity was not immediately released as the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office works to notify his family.
Because the man was handcuffed, police are investigating the incident as an in-custody death, according to authorities.
This means homicide detectives and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office will both investigate the incident.
The Medical Examiner’s Office will be responsible for determining the cause of the man’s death.
